**Drafting a Choli Pattern for Belly Dance
Taught by Rukshana/Gail Wolfenden-Steib at the Mesa Arts Center

Estimated materials cost $5 - $10 
Participants will create a fitted choli pattern for woven fabrics based on their measurements using the flat pattern method.  A mock up will be created out of muslin and corrections will be made to the finished pattern in class.  Suitable fashion fabric choices, trims, construction techniques and silhouettes for practice and performance cholis will be discussed.  Pattern paper and muslin will be provided.  Basic sewing skills required.  Please wear a supportive bra (no sports bras or heavily padded bras) and a fitted skirt to facilitate accurate measurements and fit.

Urban Tribal -Through their popularization of an "urban" influenced dance style, a paired down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, the use of electronic music and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation, urban tribal has changed the face of contemporary belly dance. Heathers Stants, as a choreographer, respectfully borrows traditional influences and combines them with her own personal expression of living in the modern world around her creating innovative pieces that both reflect and inspire current culture. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "Troupe of the Year" in Zaghareet! Magazine's Golden Belly Awards. As an instructor, Heather is known for her clear communication style and her ability to break down movements into easily understandable concepts. We look forward to having Heather Stants and Tara Kearney at Plaza de Anaya! 
Kassar - Melanie and Karin reputation is built not only on their top-notch pair dancing, but also their symbiotic ability to move as one. Between them, they also bring a background rich in formal Ballet training, West African dance, Tango fusion, and Indian dance technique, this has culminated in the development of their own unique, highly-acclaimed style of tribal belly dance. Their dance style is forever evolving, integrating new and interesting forms and dynamic moves as they continue to seek ways to incorporate various elements of dances of the world into their style. Participants will learn how to pattern, cut and sew a mermaid skirt (this style of dance skirt has a fitted top section and flairs out at the knees into a full circle plus at the hem). A detailed handout will be provided with instructions, fabric suggestions and pattern variations and embellishment ideas.  Intermediate machine sewing skills required - a familiarity with stretch fabrics is a plus.
