Spotlight Dancer/Troupe
Boom Boom Bollywood
We began as a dance class at the Domba Studio in 2003... and once the class was over we did not want to stop dancing! The answer seemed to be: Form a dance team, and here we are.
We believe that through the appreciation of the magic, fun, music, dance and drama of Bollywood Cinema, links of understanding can form between the Indian and American communities. Tears of joy and tears of sadness, strength in family, the power of love, the power of music and dance, all represented in the glitter of bangles on a wrist, the swirl of a kurta in a dancer’s energetic leap, the flash of a jeweled bindi or the sequins on a sari. Somehow the culture of Hindi cinema is speaking to our hearts here in Tempe, Arizona and we want to share it with everyone!

We have performed at Indo-American community events, World Culture Festivals and Dance Festivals all over Arizona and California to great acclaim. We have also been commissioned to teach workshops in Bollywood and Bhangra dance around the world – from the U.K. to New York to California.
Meet some of Boom Boom Bollywood:
Samantha is the Founder and Director of Boom Boom Bollywood. She was surprised and grateful when there were so many dancers who wanted to walk with her down this rather odd path! She was even more surprised and grateful when Boom Boom Bollywood's premier performance for the Arizona Indo-American Community (Diwali, 2004) was greeted with cheers and support from the community... and even tears from an Indian gentleman who had recently moved to the US. He said that he as feeling homesick and worried about living in a new country, but to see a team of American girls doing the dances of his country with such joy and skill gave him hope about making his home here. Then he started to cry, thanking her and hugging her... and something changed in Samantha in that moment (as she began to cry as well... wouldn't you?). She realized why what they were doing was important... Fun, yes. Cheesy, yes. Overly-dramatic, yes. But just like the Bollywood movies she loved, the dance team was spreading hope! If just one person walks away from a Boom Boom Bollywood performance a little happier than they were when they arrived, that makes it all worthwhile for Samantha. She is a sap.
Amineh has done a lot of dancing in her life, but says that until she danced to Bollywood music she had never had a sense of joy so incredible. "It's really weird but it makes me so happy. I've always had a love for India and dancing, so... here I am!" Boom Boom Bollywood counts on Amineh's sense of joy to give them energy, and she never disappoints them.
Durinda loves Bollywood for a number of reasons. The music
itself is so beautiful and at times heart wrenching. She loves the way she feels when she's dancing Bollywood... energized, happy and a huge smile that can't be helped. Of course Durinda admits she'd be lying if she didn't at least mention the clothing and jewelry. She says she has never felt more glamorous than when she dons her Bollywood garb. Most importantly, though, she loves looking out and seeing people having a great time when we perform. By far, her favorite performance as of yet was for the Diwali festival (Nov. 2004). "I felt so proud when I looked out and saw all the smiling faces, heard the cheers from the crowd and the applause afterwards. Such a warm and genuine reception we received that day. I felt honored to have the opportunity to perform for the Indian community."
Gina thinks Bollywood is great!!! Initially it was the costumes and look that she thought was so cool. The beautiful veils with sequins, sarees, pretty bindis, cholis with mirrors and great jewelry. Dancing Indian style and Bollywood routines is so much fun. It's a challenge but Gina likes challenges. Mostly, she now loves Bollywood because it is very theatrical in facial expressions and attitude and there is so much meaning behind a lot of the moves and combinations we do.
Rachel loves to dance Bollywood because it brings her joy. The dance moves are fun. They can be anything from graceful and girly to boyish and bouncy. The music is awesome and when she hears it, it makes her want to shake her groove
thang.
Sherry says that being able to act while dancing to the fun and beautiful music of Bollywood films helps balance her out. Playing/Dancing roles that are so romantic and fun relieves so much stress, and those Bhangra moves keep in you in shape! Sherry's passion is to help the world and all of the people heal and begin to really love themselves and one another. She is dedicated to creating an energetic frequency that allows Love to prevail! And so she makes sure that she and those around her are having FUN and enjoying life!
