Anaya Tribal

Anaya Tribal (AT) was formed with the dedication to tribal dance by Cari Smith and Tiffany Hamby years ago. Along with a few other dancers, Anaya Tribal had humble beginnings with dancing in living rooms and around bonfires. Inspired by DOMBA, Fat Chance, Gypsy Caravan, Rachel Brice and many more; with foundations in both cabaret and tribal bellydance; Cari and Tiffany have created an improvisational language that is now call "Anaya Style". Performing improvisational Tribal Style Bellydance as well innovative & experimental choreographed bellydance including tribal fusion, gothic/punk fusion and more, they also incorporate prop work such as swords, veils, fire tray, palm flame and fans. Now with a strong group of dancers, Anaya Tribal has grown from just a small group of friends to a professional dance troupe. Anaya Tribal has expanded to traveling to various bellydance and regional festivals with their tribal costume line, developing AnayaTribal.com, teaching valley wide classes as well as a forming a growing student troupe, Qadesh. 

AT performs for local charity events like AIDS Walk Arizona and Art Walk to large festivals such as the AZ Renaissance Festival, Phoenix Faerie Festival and the AZ Skin Art Expo as well as private events and restaurants. Recently AT has performed at Tribal Fusion Faire, Tribal San Diego Style and soon at Gothla 2009. 

Growing and Growing
After a few years of dancing with Anaya Tribal, as a side job to working in professional theater as a costume designer, Cari began teaching bellydance fitness at a west valley gym in 2005. Many of the students in the fitness class requested a more formal training which soon made its way to teaching beginning through advanced tribal classes (now sword) in the West Valley. Anaya Tribal, as a troupe, took a break from performing in 2005 so Cari and Tiff found their way to performing with Syren Bellydance and eventually in the Arizona Renaissance Festival bringing the girls of Anaya Tribal with them.

Shortly after founding Syren with Carrie Konyha of Sedona, both Cari and Tiffany were asked to teach tribal at the Bellydance Shoppe in North Phoenix. And in 2007, with the increased exposure of Anaya Tribal through performances and classes, Cari and Tiffany reformed Anaya better then ever. Most recently Tiffany, along with friend and former student - Kimberly Hewitt, opened a World Dance and Music Studio Plaza de Anaya in Tempe. It has become the new community gathering place. With the performance troupe and costume line, they are very excited about this new home.
