Dunyana

Dunyana, a San Diego Middle Eastern Dance company consists of three core dancers: Marula, Lena and Sherene with honorary members: Cassie, Jasmina, and Shalimar who join them on special occasions to present pieces in Middle Eastern Dance fusion. As a dance company, Dunyana, is dedicated to performing for community events and fundraisers. On July 15th, 2007 the group competed in the Wiggles of the West” competition in Reno, Nevada and won the Alternative Ensemble category.

Exploring different creative venues is an energy that empowers the group. Their recent presentation: “Imaginary Journey through Middle Eastern Dance” was a show presented by Marula, Sahar Sami and Dunyana. Journey, the show, created an inspirational setting for local and not so local dancers. The show was presented on January 20th at the Saville Theater. All participating artists wrote their own narrations and wove an excursion through dance from the creation of time that ushered in the future. The narrations were expertly blended into the fabric of the show as each performer transitioned smoothly through time and history. 

In January, 2009, at the Saville Theater, with Marula as director, Dunyana will present another challenging theme "Once Upon a Belly dance" The show will be a collection of Short Stories told through fusion, tribal and traditional Middle Eastern dance. The narrations presented may be a fairy tale, a depiction of history, a fantasy, or tackle social situations, ECT. True to their commitment to the community, Dunyana will once again donate all funds raised from the show to our community Outreach Programs. As a fitness coordinator for the YMCA, Marula is personally involved with the Outreach programs by teaching fitness to pregnant teens from an alternative high school. The pregnant teens range from 14 to 17 years in age.

Dunyana, is a dance team and definitely relies equally on each member’s contribution, therefore, we would like to give each member a brief introduction.

Marula – Director. Past awards include: Divine Dancer of the Universe, People’s Choice, Grand Dancer, Headliner of the Year, Alternative Dance Ensemble, and nominated for the IAMED award Cabaret Dancer of the Year. She was also president of the SAMEDA for three years.

Sherene – Is a core Dunyana member and winner of the Alternative Dance Ensemble 2007

Lena – Is a core Dunyana member and winner of the Alternative Dance Ensemble 2007

Jasmina – Is an honorary Dunyana member. Past awards include the Divine Belly Dancer of the Universe 2002 and Headliner of the year 2006. Jasmina teaches American Cabaret bellydance at Mesa and Cuyamaca College.

Cassie -Blends tribal with cabaret, East Indian and follows her body’s response to the music. She was also First runner up in the Belly Dance of the Universe competition Group category.

Shalimar – Is an honorary member of Dunyana and the star dancer for “Middle Earth Ensemble” the winner’s of the 2006 Golden Belly award.

Joanne – Our newest member is working very, very hard to prepare for our next presentation at the San Diego County Fair on July 5th.
