Spotlight Dancer/Troupe
Olu
Hello everyone,
I'm Olu a Belly Dancer based in Los Angeles. I began my life as a dancer in 1995. I had been searching for something to do that was new, exciting and physical. For some reason, the idea of Belly Dancing was very appealing.......go figure!
I soon found my first teacher and inspiration in Hollywood. Her name is Europa. She's a wonderful artist and teacher. Through her I gained a solid understanding and feeling of technique along with discovering my love for the dance. I also credit Europa with bringing out what would later become my signature style of snake like undulations. I then went on to perform with Europa and her troupe, Raks Maj Noun at many events.
I came to my second teacher Ansuya in 2000. With a solid foundation of the dancer under my belt, I was invited to join her troupe, Yaleil. Through Ansuya's instruction, I learned new dynamics of dance through emotion and movement. Talk about lighting a fire under me........Ansuya opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities through her artistry in fusion
dance. Being a part of a professional troupe forced me to step up to the plate and re-evaluate myself as a dancer and what my goals were. Working as a team member with my sisters in dance was and still is one of the most beautiful moments in time that I'll always cherish.
In 2002, Ansuya moved to Florida to pursue dancing and new horizons. It was then that I continued my training with Akasha. She was the co-director of Yaleil and new Director of Yaleil Los Angeles. With Akasha, I gained new respect for the art of zill playing and syncopation........something I'm still working on! Akasha also taught me the importance of listening to my music and interpreting how it makes me feel.
Yaleil Los Angeles continued to perform for about another year and then disbanded in late 2003. At this point I was determined, excited and scared to make the transition into becoming a full time solo performer. Since then I've been teaching and dancing at numerous fantastic events including private parties, corporate events, weddings/receptions and festivals.
This is where I'm at right now in this awesome journey. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow both as a performer and artist. Not only am I honored to have met so many beautiful and amazing people though Belly Dance, I'm grateful to be a part of such a rich and diverse community. Belly Dance has opened my world to many new and great directions. It will always be a part of me.
Namaste,
Olu
