How to clean your belly dance costume—The Rukshana Method

with Rukshana - 10 - 11 a.m.

As a costume professional I have had to clean a variety of costumes over the years. Everything from fuzzy animals to classical tutus to vintage dresses have crossed my path with an assortment of odors and unknown substances. As a dancer, I look at my costumes as an investment and consider routine cleaning and maintenance as my way of protecting my investment. A good quality beginner costume can easily start at $160 plus without alterations (an investment in today’s economy for a number of dancers). Professional couture costumes can easily run into the $1000 plus category. With routine maintenance, your costume has a better chance of retaining its value and you will look your best in it. This class will cover the basics on cleaning and maintaining costumes (both Cabaret and Tribal), include a detailed hand out with cleaning instructions and demonstrations on actual costumes. If you have a costume that needs cleaning please bring it to the class—it may become one of our examples.

*Please bring 3 large old bath towels and a way to transport a damp costume home if you would like to have one cleaned as part of the demo. A long plastic tub or laundry basket works well for transporting the costume. I will have fans available to speed the dry time but weather conditions will impact the dry time.

workshop is one hour - $10

About the instructor:
Rukshana (rook SHAH na) began dancing 9 years ago and has been performing regularly in Phoenix venues for the past 5 years. She is currently a house dancer at Tandoori Times in Scottsdale and Glendale, AZ. During the months of May and June she can be found teaching American Cabaret style belly dance and performing in Cedar City, Utah. She is a founding member of The Dojo Girls, a ‘Tribaret’ dance troupe. Rukshana owns and operates Rukshana Raks!, a custom dancewear company that provides original designs, construction, professional alterations and costume refurbishing for dancers worldwide.

Rukshana’s alter ego, Gail Wolfenden-Steib, is an award-winning theatrical costume designer and costume technician based in Phoenix, Arizona.  This summer marked her 15th season as the costume painter/dyer for the Tony Award Winning Utah Shakespearean Festival. She has been the resident costume designer for Stageworks at the Mesa Arts Center, Phoenix Theatre and Phoenix Theatre’s Cookie Company, and a member of the costume production staff of Ballet Arizona. Her design and construction work has been seen on numerous stages around the valley since 1994. Gail has taught fiber reactive dying and costume arts classes through Mesa Arts Center’s studio art program and various dance studios in the Phoenix area. In 2007 she presented the sold out professional development workshop on costume distressing at the USITT national conference in Phoenix.

She earned a BA and an MFA from Arizona State University.

Boobology 101

"Boobology 101" or The Making of a Costume Bra.  What I teach you in this workshop, is my method of covering bras. In fact, I will cover a bra right in front of you. The way I do it you don't have to buy a size bigger. My goal is for my students to have COMFORTABLE and BEAUTIFUL Bras to dance in.

I will bring lots of examples for the students to look at, both finished and under construction. I will also bring a short hand out.

I will also bring some of the items I use, which you can buy.
